Intracorneal injection of amphothericin B for recurrent fungal keratitis and endophthalmitis.

چکیده
Penetrating keratoplasty carries an infectious risk. Its requirement for topical corticosteroid therapy facilitates fungal growth with resulting keratitis. Although progression of fungal keratitis to intraocular infection is uncommon, endophthalmitis resulting from keratitis usually has a poor visual prognosis. Fungal infection under these circumstances remains a diagnostic and therapeutic challenge. We report a complicated case of recurrent fungal keratitis with endophthalmitis following a contaminated penetrating keratoplasty that ultimately was controlled with a new treatment modality. Intrastromal corneal injections combined with intravitreal injection of amphotericin B led to the eradication of the corneal fungal plaques and the intraocular infection. Intrastromal corneal injections of amphotericin B may offer a less invasive, in-office alternative to repeat penetrating keratoplasty.

BACKGROUND Fungal keratitis has been rarely reported following intracorneal ring segment (ICRS) inmplantation. This paper aims to report a case of fungal keratitis with aspergillus fumigatus following ICRS implantation for correction of keratoconus. METHODS A retrospective chart review was done. Data including demographics, clinical history and presentation, microbiological analysis as well a...

PURPOSE The authors report a case of fungal scleral keratitis and endophthalmitis as a complication of pterygium surgery. METHODS Case presentation. RESULTS A 46-year old woman underwent pterygium excision with topical use of intraoperative mitomycin C. By day 21 after excision, scleral melting was followed by fungal keratitis. Endophthalmitis ensued, which rapidly progressed, despite surgi...
متن کاملA case of fungal keratitis and endophthalmitis post penetrating keratoplasty resulting from fungal contamination of the donor cornea
Purpose Fungal infections post keratoplasty due to contamination of the donor corneal graft have become important issues that need to be addressed. Here we report a case of fungal keratitis and endophthalmitis post penetrating keratoplasty (PKP) due to fungal contamination of the donor corneal graft. Observations We present a 52-year-old male who underwent PKP with a donor corneal graft that ...
